Marcellus Robin was born in 1880 (died in 1934) in Moulis, a village located in the Ariège department in southwestern France. In 1905, Robin moved to Bordeaux, where he became a professional double bassist. At the same time, he established himself as a luthier and operated a small workshop where he operated for the next 22 years.

Robin developed a reputation for the high quality of his instruments, especially his work on the Stradivarius model. His instruments were typically well-finished with either a dark pink or transparent brown-red varnish, reminiscent of the Venetian school and were signed and branded internally. He employed the Coat of Arms of Bordeaux, edged with interlaced crescents, as his label.
