Full Description
Carlo Antonio Testore (1693–1765) was a Milanese violin maker and the son of Carlo Giuseppe Testore. He trained in his father’s workshop and later continued the family business in Milan, becoming one of the principal figures of the Testore workshop during the mid-eighteenth century.
The Testore family formed an important part of the Milanese school of violin making, working alongside makers such as the Grancino family. Carlo Antonio’s instruments reflect both the working traditions of the family workshop and broader influences present in Milan at the time, including elements associated with Stradivari and the Amati tradition.
Instruments by Carlo Antonio Testore are often recognized for their distinctive scroll, sometimes referred to as the “Testore scroll,” as well as for the practical and direct working style typical of the Milanese school. His output included violins, violas, and cellos produced during the middle decades of the eighteenth century.
Carlo Antonio Testore’s instruments remain an important part of the historical output of the Milanese school. His cellos are particularly well known, and a double bass attributed to the Testore family was played by the nineteenth-century virtuoso Giovanni Bottesini.
