How many clefs does the cello use?
To notate the cello’s full range, composers use three clefs: bass, tenor, and treble.
The Bass Clef
Much of the cello’s lower and middle register — from the open C string (C2), two octaves below middle C, up to G above middle C — is written in bass clef.
In J.S. Bach’s six suites for unaccompanied cello, Suites 1–5 remain primarily within this range and are predominantly notated in bass clef. The Sixth Suite, however, was written for a five-string cello known as the violoncello piccolo. The additional higher string allowed Bach to extend the music into a higher register without requiring the cellist to play extensively in the upper positions.
Tenor Clef
As the music moves higher, notation shifts to tenor clef. This clef covers much of the cello’s middle register — roughly from A below middle C up to C above middle C — and helps avoid excessive ledger lines in bass clef.
A significant portion of intermediate and advanced repertoire is written in tenor clef. As cellists begin playing in higher positions, fluency in reading tenor clef becomes essential.

Treble Clef
In the highest register, notation shifts to treble clef. This clef is used when the music extends well above the tenor range, allowing composers to write upper-register passages without excessive ledger lines.
