Full Description

William Bartruff is a distinguished American luthier known for crafting exceptional stringed instruments since 1972. His journey into violin making began in childhood when he played on a 400-year-old Gasparo da Salò violin, a family heirloom that sparked his fascination with the instrument’s rich sound and craftsmanship.

To refine his skills, Bartruff traveled to Italy to study the techniques of early violin makers. His dedication led him to develop unique varnishes and construction methods that closely mirror those of the old masters. As a result, his instruments have attracted some of America’s finest musicians, with several of his violas played in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. While skilled in making violins, violas, and cellos, he is particularly celebrated for his violas.

In 2011, Bartruff founded the VGA Academy for Refurbishment in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to pass on his expertise to a new generation of luthiers. His apprentices have gone on to craft instruments used in major orchestras, including the Minnesota Opera and the Chicago Symphony.

Through his craftsmanship and commitment to education, Bartruff continues to shape the future of violin making, preserving and advancing this fine tradition.
