Paul Weidhaas was a distinguished German bow maker whose craftsmanship and artistry earned him international recognition. Born in 1894 in Markneukirchen, Germany—a town renowned for its deep-rooted tradition in instrument and bow making—he trained under his father before refining his skills through extensive work across Europe.

Weidhaas apprenticed and collaborated with several master bow makers, including Georg Winterling in Hamburg, Josef Vedral in The Hague, and Max Möller in Amsterdam. His most significant period of professional development, however, came during his time in Paris with the renowned French bow maker Victor Fétique. Under Fétique’s mentorship, Weidhaas honed his precision, stylistic refinement, and understanding of the nuanced balance and playability of fine French bows.

Fétique quickly recognized Weidhaas’s exceptional skill and entrusted him with making bows for his workshop. Some of these bows were later stamped with Fétique’s brand, a testament to the high regard in which his work was held. Even after Weidhaas returned to Germany, Fétique continued to commission bows from him, demonstrating the enduring professional respect and collaboration between the two artisans. This influence is evident in Weidhaas’s bows, which incorporate elements of the French tradition while maintaining the structural integrity and precision characteristic of German bow making.

In 1918, after successfully completing his master’s examination in Hamburg, Weidhaas took over the management of his father’s shop in Markneukirchen. His vast experience and international exposure helped him establish a reputation as one of the most accomplished German bow makers of the 20th century.

Weidhaas’s bows are celebrated for their exceptional balance, responsiveness, and rich tonal quality. Today, his work remains highly sought after by musicians and collectors alike, with his bows continuing to command significant attention in auctions and private collections.
