Alexis Villaume Cello – Troyes c.1820

SOLD

Full Description

Alexis Villaume was born in Mirecourt in 1766 and later established himself in Troyes, where he worked in the workshop of Claude Aubert. In 1791, according to the Musée de la Lutherie (Mirecourt), Villaume and Claude Giron purchased Aubert’s business and continued production under the partnership name Villaume & Giron. Published sources note that the firm produced violins, guitars, and musical strings, and that Villaume remained active in Troyes until his death in 1842.

Troyes, in the historic Champagne region of France, is known for its winding medieval streets and distinctive half-timbered houses that reflect centuries of local craftsmanship. At the end of the eighteenth century the town supported a small but active community of artisans, including instrument makers who worked in workshops inherited from earlier generations. This environment formed the setting in which makers such as Claude Aubert, Alexis Villaume, and Claude Giron carried out their work.
