Full Description

Johann Gottlob Ficker (1744–1832) was a German violin maker working in Markneukirchen, Saxony, and one of the most accomplished members of the Ficker family. He learned the craft from his father, Johann Caspar Ficker, and entered the violin makers’ guild in 1764.

Working in the Stainer-influenced tradition of eighteenth-century Saxony, Ficker developed a recognizable style distinguished by carefully carved scrolls, graceful pegboxes, and varnish ranging from golden yellow to reddish brown. His instruments frequently bear an internal brand with his initials, I G F, separated by stars.

Ficker’s work was appreciated during his lifetime for its fine materials and meticulous craftsmanship. His long career spanned the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, securing his place among the notable makers of the early Markneukirchen school.
