Full Description

August Friedrich Herrmann (1863–1943) was a distinguished German bow maker from Markneukirchen, a city famous for its rich tradition of instrument and bow making. Born into a family of skilled craftsmen, Herrmann was the son of Christian Friedrich Herrmann, from whom he learned the foundations of bow making. Seeking to hone his skills further, he apprenticed under Wilhelm Knopf in Dresden, a prominent figure in the bow-making world.

Around 1900, Herrmann returned to Markneukirchen to establish his own workshop, producing bows that skillfully combined the techniques he had learned from the Knopf family with his own innovations. His bows are characterized by their refined craftsmanship and adherence to the high standards associated with both the Herrmann and Knopf traditions.

The Herrmann family’s connection to the Knopf family extended beyond craftsmanship. In 1861, Herrmann’s father, Christian Friedrich, married Carolina Wilhelmine Knopf, solidifying a bond between two of the most respected bow-making dynasties in Germany. This familial and professional partnership contributed to the enduring influence of their combined expertise on the craft.

August Friedrich Herrmann’s bows remain highly valued by musicians and collectors. They are celebrated for their quality, playability, and adherence to the Knopf style. His craftsmanship reflects the peak of German bow-making artistry during his era.

Through his dedication and skill, August Friedrich Herrmann made a significant mark on the tradition of German bow making, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be admired and studied by artisans and enthusiasts alike.
