Full Description

This fine Italian viola develop a warm and beautiful open tone.

Alessandro Ciciliati (b. 1959) is a giant of Ferrara’s musical scene. He initially earned degrees in art and double-bass performance; however, when he met luthier Ivano Coratti in 1977, Ciciliati pivoted to focus on violin-making. He apprenticed under Coratti for four years before opening his own workshop. Ciciliati eventually gained international recognition, earning his first major violin-making prize in 1984 and an Honorary Mention at the 1994 Cremona Triennale competition. Building on this success, Ciciliati became the President and Artistic Director of the Estense Philharmonic Orchestra in 1998.

Although he has gained international acclaim, Ciciliati’s craft is rooted in his passion for his native Ferrara. He jumpstarted the city’s modern violin-making tradition, and he still maintains a workshop on the Via Vallazza. Ciciliati’s instruments reflect old-school Italian artistry, with a marked influence from fellow Ferrara native, Ettore Soffriti. Ciciliati prides himself on refined acoustics, carefully selected tonewood, and precise attention to detail.
