André Georges Richaume
Archetier André Georges Richaume (1905-1966) was born into a string instrument dynasty; his grandfather was luthier Charles Claude Fétique; his father, Louis Justin Richaume, was also a violin maker, and his uncles, Victor François Fétique and Jules Fétique, and cousin, Marcel Fétique, were all bowmakers.
Richaume studied under Emile François Ouchard in his Mirecourt workshop before heading to Paris to work for his uncle, Victor Fétique, in 1927. In 1932, Richaume opened his own Parisian atelier, where he produced high-quality bows under his own brand, stamped Richaume à Paris, until 1957. Richaume enjoyed considerable success, eventually gaining the distinction of “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” (Best Worker of France) in 1955.
Richaume’s bows display the influence of the great French bowmakers of his era, including his teachers EF Ouchard, Victor Fétique, and Eugène Sartory.
