Full Description

Canadian luthier David Prentice discovered a passion for string instruments after earning a degree in mathematics. He started playing the violin in his late 20s , and he quickly developed an interest in violin-making. According to Prentice, the hands-on craft of viola making reminded him of building models as a child, and he dove headfirst into the industry.

Prentice studied under Joseph Curtin, John Newton, and Philip Davis, and by 1988, he had become a full-time luthier and opened his own shop, with a speciality in violas. He has since become a respected member of the international string instrument community, even receiving a prestigious grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Prentice’s instruments have graced stages across North America and Europe, and several have been acquired by the Banff Centre, Stanford University, and the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Prentice approaches violin making with a unique perspective informed by his mathematics background. He is fascinated by the minute details that produce a unique sound quality, and his instruments are marked by a complex, rich, and powerful tone.
