German Violin Labeled Stradivarius – Circa 1915
$3,500
Full Description
This violin is an early 20th-century workshop instrument from the Markneukirchen/Schönbach region, built on a Stradivari model and typical of the mid-grade production exported widely during this period. It features a two-piece flamed maple back with matching ribs and scroll, and a straight-grained spruce top. The varnish is a warm orange-brown spirit varnish with light antiquing, characteristic of Central European trade work of the era.
The scroll shows the shallow fluting, regional proportions, and stylistic traits associated with Saxon/Bohemian construction, but also displays clear hand finishing and individual shaping—more character and refinement than the fully mechanized scrolls seen in later factory output. Chamfers, toolwork, and the turns of the volute reflect the handwork typical of mid-grade workshop instruments from this region.
Rib construction, corner mitres, and overall workmanship correspond closely with documented Markneukirchen/Schönbach methods of the early 1900s. The violin bears a printed “Antonius Stradiuarius Cremonensis – Faciebat Anno 17–” label, a common trade label used in this area and period.
