Full Description

Johann Joseph Hentschel (d. 1782), also recorded as Hentschl, was an eighteenth-century violin maker based in Brünn, now Brno in the Czech Republic. He apprenticed with Johann Benedikt Wasner before spending his journeyman years chiefly in Vienna. In 1738, he returned to Brno to establish his own workshop, becoming a citizen the following year.

His instruments reflect the traditions of the Prague and Viennese schools while displaying a distinctive personal style. His work is noted for careful craftsmanship, attractively chosen wood, and a characteristic outline with open C-bouts and broad upper bouts. Hentschel holds a recognized place in the Brno school of violin making; after his death, his former apprentice Sebastian Wutzelhofer continued the workshop.
