Full Description
Leopold Widhalm (1722 – 1776), an Austrian luthier who settled in Nuremberg in 1745 and who is generally recognized as the best maker in Germany following Jacob Stainer. This violin is a highly distinctive and graceful model that is a synthesis of Amati and Stainer patterns, featuring a petite and elegant design and an even, warm sound with clarity, tremendous versatility and a subtle depth of color.
The top of the violin is beautifully executed with its relatively high-arching characteristics that demonstrate Stainer’s influence. It has elegantly cut sound holes and a pretty scroll that is carved with the care and expertise that are among the hallmarks of this 18th-century master. The one-piece back features subtle shading and a transparent finish that reveals the violin’s original golden-brown varnish, naturally worn over its lifetime.
At our restoration studio, our expert luthiers took the greatest care in restoring the button and edge of the back on the treble side, worn by the many violinists who have played this instrument over its 250-year history. This rare violin exudes an unmistakable personality that is full of character and is highly recommended to demanding musicians looking for superior craftsmanship and unbeatable value.
