A fine antique English violin by Lockey Hill c. 1785
Born into the Hill luthier dynasty, Lockey Hill (1756-1810) began his career by producing violins for large firms, including Longman & Co. and Longman & Broderip. These instruments often follow models by Jacob Stainer or Nicolo Amati.
By 1785, Lockey had begun producing violins under his own label. He passed on his trade and workshop to his son, Henry Lockey Hill, who became a distinguished luthier in his own right.
