Full Description

Natale Carletti (1904–1979) was a distinguished Italian luthier known for his exceptional craftsmanship and contributions to 20th-century violin making. Born in Pieve di Cento, Bologna, he was the son and apprentice of the esteemed maker Carlo Carletti. His journey in lutherie began at the young age of 11, working in his father’s workshop and later at the Mozzani workshop. He also studied cello at the Bologna Conservatory, which deepened his understanding of string instruments.

In 1925, Carletti and his brother Orfeo established a workshop in Bologna, where they worked for six years before he returned to Pieve di Cento in 1941 to manage the family workshop alongside his younger brother Nullo after their father’s passing. Over his prolific career, he crafted more than 200 violins, 200 cellos, and 20 double basses, often inspired by the “San Lorenzo” Stradivari violin. His meticulous workmanship was complemented by a diverse varnish palette, ranging from golden-yellow to deep red.

Carletti’s excellence was widely recognized, earning him prestigious awards, including a gold medal in Cremona in 1949 for a double bass, as well as honors in Ascoli Piceno (1959) and Bagnacavallo (1972).
