Richard Grünke is a renowned German bow maker, celebrated for his exceptional craftsmanship and deep understanding of historical bow making traditions. Born in 1930 in Poland (then part of Germany), Grünke began his apprenticeship under Edwin Herrmann in Markneukirchen, a town long known for its tradition of fine instrument and bow making.

After completing his training, Grünke worked for the prestigious H.R. Pfretzschner workshop, where he refined his skills and developed his distinctive style. In 1975, he established his own workshop in Bubenreuth, Germany, quickly gaining a reputation for producing bows of exceptional quality for violin, viola, cello, and bass.

Grünke’s work is deeply rooted in the French bow making tradition, especially inspired by François Xavier Tourte and Dominique Peccatte. His bows are known for their elegance, superb balance, and responsiveness, making them highly sought after by professional cellists.

Richard Grünke has trained and influenced a generation of bow makers, including his sons, Klaus and Thomas Grünke, who continue the family tradition. His contributions have helped shape modern German bow making and maintain its status as one of the highest expressions of the craft.
