Cigno Tomassucci Cello – Arrone 1951

SOLD

Full Description

This cello bears the original label “Tomassucci Cigno, fece in Arrone (Umbria), nel 1951,” recording production in Arrone during the post-war period.

The instrument features an elegant outline and a fine selection of tonewoods, including a spruce top with medium to broad grain, paired with a one-piece slab-cut maple back, with ribs and scroll of lightly flamed quarter-cut maple. The scroll and soundholes are carefully carved, with clean execution and deliberate fluting around the f-holes.

The varnish is a warm amber-brown over a lighter ground, showing natural wear consistent with age. Overall, the cello represents a well-executed example of mid-20th-century Italian regional making.

Cigno Tomassucci was an Italian maker of violin-family instruments active in Arrone, Umbria, during the mid-20th century. He belonged to the Tomassucci family of luthiers, which includes Giasone Tomassucci (1896–1956), a documented Italian violin maker known for his work in Arrone before later establishing himself in Rome.

Labels reading “fece in Arrone” record that these instruments were produced in Arrone, Umbria. Examples include violins and cellos dated to the late 1940s and early 1950s, suggesting an active period of production during these years.

While Cigno Tomassucci is less extensively documented in major reference literature than Giasone Tomassucci, instruments bearing his label show consistent workmanship and clearly identifiable authorship, supporting his recognition as an individual maker working within the Tomassucci family tradition. His instruments are best understood as authentic examples of mid-century Italian regional making rather than workshop trade instruments.
