Full Description

Collin-Mezin cello labeled Paolo Giacomelli. This fine French cello was made in Mirecourt in the workshop of Collin-Mézin “fils”. The Paolo Giacomelli label is one of the brands that Collin-Mezin developed.

Luthier Charles Collin-Mézin fils (1870-1934) oversaw the Collin-Mézin family workshop, originally established in Paris in the nineteenth century. Collin-Mézin fils apprenticed under his father, Charles Jean Baptiste Collin-Mézin père, and worked closely with him until Collin-Mézin père’s death in 1923. After his father passed, Collin-Mézin fils assumed leadership of the atelier and moved it to Mirecourt. His son, Charles Jean-Baptiste Collin-Mézin III, and business partner, Jean Larcher, took over the workshop in 1934.

Collin-Mézin fils’ instruments are widely recognized for their vibrant sound and flexibility. They typically bear his father’s label but will note that they are “par Ch J.B. Collin-Mézin.” Later violins may also be stamped “Paris,” even if they were made after the workshop’s move to Mirecourt.
