Giuseppe Castagnino (1883–1966): A Master of the Genoa Violin Making Tradition

Content overview:

Giuseppe Castagnino was an Italian luthier recognized for his distinctive craftsmanship and significant contributions to the Genoese school of violin making in the early to mid-20th century. Born in Chiavari in 1883, he was introduced to woodworking through his father, a carpenter and cooper who also crafted musical instruments as a hobby. This early exposure laid the foundation for his passion and skill in violin making.

Although largely self-taught, Castagnino briefly worked with the renowned luthier Giuseppe Fiorini in Munich in 1913. This experience influenced his approach to violin making, helping him refine his techniques while maintaining a highly personal style. After his time in Munich, he returned to Chiavari and established himself as an independent maker. Over the years, he gained recognition through competitions, earning medals at exhibitions in Milan, Turin, and Venice.

Castagnino’s instruments were primarily inspired by Guarneri del Gesù models but featured several distinctive elements. His violins often had elongated but not angular f-holes, an extended button on the back (a trait common in Genoese instruments), and a uniquely carved scroll with a pronounced upper and rear volute, typically highlighted with black ink along the chamfer. These characteristics set his work apart from other Italian makers of his time.

Giuseppe Castagnino remained dedicated to his craft until his passing in 1966. His instruments continue to be sought after by musicians and collectors, reflecting his lasting impact on Italian violin making. His legacy lives on in the rich tradition of the Genoese school, where his work remains a testament to his skill, artistry, and dedication to the craft.
