Eastman cellos are a perfect blend of form and function, a great choice for any intermediate or advanced player.

Woods and Craftsmanship

Even a quick glance at Eastman cellos and you’ll see that they use only the finest seasoned tonewood. The wood used to create a cello will ultimately determine its quality and sound, so this choice is incredibly important. Most Eastman cellos are made using maple for the back, neck and ribs, and use spruce for the tops.

An Eastman cello is crafted using inspiration from some of the world’s most celebrated cello makers in history. Stradivarius (known for well-rounded tones), Guarneri (dark and earthy sounds) and Montagnana (warm, powerful sounds) are among the creators that guide the construction of each Eastman cello. Some other models include makes such as Ivan Dunov, Jean Pierre Lupot and Rudolph Doetsch.

Though some manufacturers will machine parts to create their cellos, an Eastman cello will always be hand crafted. While a machine can help create pieces quickly, there is no substitute for the time-honored methods of hand crafting each piece of wood with the perfect treatments and shaping to allow the player to create the most beautiful tones possible. Eastman cellos pride themselves on the use of their tested methods to create the best instrument for any player, of any skill level.

Why Choose an Eastman Cello?

Dolce Fine Violins features many different brands of cello, and makes of all kinds, so why should you consider an Eastman cello?

Eastman cellos are known to be among the best cellos for players of any skill. Because of their superior hand-crafted construction method and their sound quality, Eastman cellos are often very sought-after by intermediate and advanced players. Eastman always aims to combine physical beauty and auditory beauty with each piece they create.

Protecting Your Investment

As with any professional instrument, they’re the tools of your trade; keep them safe and in proper shape for the best results and longevity.

You might notice that most cellos have a decorative inlay on their tops and backs. This finish is called “purfling” and serves to create a very pleasing appearance. But this finish also helps to protect your cello. It can prevent cracks from forming and also helps to protect the wood from when your cello is bumped or dropped.

Finding the right case for your cello is almost as important as picking the cello itself! Any time you are moving a cello from Point A to B, you should be transporting it in a case. Quality cellos use several wood planes that are carved very thin, and this makes them vulnerable to impacts and damage. Check out our case section for a great selection of cases. Eastman Strings also manufactures cases to your size, material, and care specifications as well.

How Do I Make My Final Choices? There’s So Much Information!

With the amount of information out there about cello construction and sound, it can be tough to make a final decision, especially if you’re ordering online and can’t touch and hear your instrument personally. If you’re feeling hesitant about some of your top picks, ask questions! Reach out to us here or to your potential buy’s manufacturer. If you have a teacher or mentor, ask them what direction you should go in.

Whatever you find online, just remember that finding the right cello for you can be very personal, from your own arm length and how you hold your cello to your desired sounds. Whatever you are looking for, there will be an appropriate Eastman cello for you, and we can help you discover it!
